Kaua’i – The Kalalau Trail
Posted on 24. Jun, 2010 by Dan Zelikman in Videos, Wanderer
In three simple words, Kaua’i is breathtaking. Kim and I agreed that it was one of our favorite places we’ve ever visited together and we hope to make another visit back soon. One of the elements we fell in love with immediately was the famed Kalalau Trail. As far as hiking experiences go, it had a little of everything. Endless coastal views that only get better the further you go, lush and unique plant life, private beaches, vast waterfalls, and friendly passerby’s who give you a smile and a nod as they go. We were even able to witness an authentic rain forest downpour after a storm pummeled us for over two hours! In some strange fashion, we loved it!
We were only able to hike four miles in, but we enjoyed every second of it. Thank you for checking out the video, I hope it gives you some incentive to visit the amazing island of Kaua’i.

I don’t know, Dan…. The frog picture really deserved December, don’t you think?

Dan…awesome buddy. I did only the first two miles to Hanakapiai years ago on a KVB press trip…gorgeous, but a tough trail for someone like me who’s not a regular hiker…but we made it in and back. Someday, would really like to experience all 11 miles…camping and all. One day…

Mom, we were going to use the frog for December but the skin tone was all wrong!
Nathan, the hike to Hanakapiai is incredible, and it was originally all we planned for! When we got there the storm was just getting started, but Kim was jonesed to see the waterfall so we marched on, getting pounded with rain the whole way! Somehow it was even more epic that way.
The entire 11 mile hike is on my radar as well. We may have to coordinate that one buddy, one day…

Dan,
Pretty awesome hike you had with your gf.
How much time did it take to hike four miles?

Thanks Slava! I think because we spent a good amount of time at the beach and the waterfall, we were on the hike for a total of about 6 hours. But if you just run up and down the trail with minimal photo opps, you can probably do it in under 4.

Not bad, have you ever thought to go all 11 miles? =)
I’ve heard that you need to get a permission from state to go this trail. Is that so?

I am definitely planning on doing the entire 11 miles and camping over night, hopefully sometime next year! As for asking for a permit, no, I hadn’t heard of that. But that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t double-check with the State if you’re planning to hike it,
