In three simple words, Kaua’i is breathtaking. Kim and I agreed that it was one of our favorite places we’ve ever visited together and we hope to make another visit back soon. One of the elements we fell in love with immediately was the famed Kalalau Trail. As far as hiking experiences go, it had a little of everything. Endless coastal views that only get better the further you go, lush and unique plant life, private beaches, vast waterfalls, and friendly passerby’s who give you a smile and a nod as they go. We were even able to witness an authentic rain forest downpour after a storm pummeled us for over two hours! In some strange fashion, we loved it!

We were only able to hike four miles in, but we enjoyed every second of it. Thank you for checking out the video, I hope it gives you some incentive to visit the amazing island of Kaua’i.

With a laid back demeanor, a full head of wild hair, and the surfing abilities of someone who was indefinitely born to spend his days in the water, Rob Machado epitomizes the concept of a soul surfer. I was lucky enough to be the recipient of some free passes to the Hawaiian International Film Festival, (thanks Kim) to the premier of his new surf flick, “The Drifter.” The film is about Rob’s journey West, as he explores parts of Bali and Indonesia in the pursuit of perfect waves and an exit from the daily grind of being a celebrity athlete. The film showcases a personal side of Rob as well, sharing his insights on philosophy and lifestyle as well as his personal photography, art, and music.

The film awakens your travel bug instantly, and I found myself dreaming of a few destinations I’ve had on the brain for years. The film endures a combination of gorgeous backdrop, glassy empty sets, and the typical perfect complimentary soundtrack you can expect from a Taylor Steele movie.

Although I enjoyed the film a lot and recommend it to anyone who is a lover of surfing or travel, the film itself was not the highlight of my night. We were at a premier party with the type of spread you would expect, drinks, pupus, and few Lost cast members. You know, the uze! What I didn’t expect to see was the star of the film himself, Rob Machado, giving an interview a few feet away from me as I sipped on a beer. Naturally, I had to meet him.

Because of the intimate setting of the lounge, Kim and I were able to meet and chat with Rob briefly. His relaxed personality on film is fully transparent as he was extremely patient and engaging with us as we discussed traveling, surfing, and his movie, “The Drifter.” He later mentioned the difficult balance of taking on such a personal role with video cameras and a production crew surrounding him at all times. I think he pulled it off well. Then, I ruined the moment by awkwardly asking him for a photo. But Rob said yes anyway. Sweet.

Social media has been a hot topic as of late, and Hawaii Business Magazine decided to feature the subject in their August issue. Since they were looking for folks who Twittered more than they probably should, I was lucky enough to be chosen for their inside feature story, “Social Networks: You Snooze, You Lose.” Shara Enay and I talked about how businesses need not be intimidated by social, and how the hardest step is getting started.

Everyone is in the same boat right now, that we’re all watching this digital evolution unveil itself one day at a time. But the important thing is that while we watch, we also participate. There are no experts on the subject, only people with opinions, ideas, and probably loud personalities (guilty). So take the first step, find your medium and a voice, and find ways to help your business strive.

South Shore Sunday depicts my footage captured from surf sessions streamed from January to April of 2009 on Oahu. This short surf movie is my second that I have done, and if you haven’t seen the first please feel free to view it here. Although surfing and being in Hawaii’s waters is my first passion, filming and editing surf movies is a close follow up. I love watching surf movies in general, but it’s pretty sweet to watch your own too. It serves as both a reminder of our experiences as well as a way to share the experiences with all of you. I hope you enjoy the film, and I welcome all and any feedback you may have. Cheers for watching guys!

So after about a year and a half in Hawaii, Momma Zelikman decided it was time to visit the islands for the first time. She came with very little expectations, only to celebrate her son’s birthday and enjoy the sights. Through a few hikes, beaches, surf sessions, sunsets, and a couple of fruity drinks, I think she came home with at least a smile. Or at least a few hundred pictures… which she made this video with… in less than twenty four hours of returning back to New Jersey…

So this is my 3rd Twitter related post on my blog and for a while it will have to be my last! Otherwise I am going to need Twitter to start sending me checks for being an extension of their marketing department! From here on in it will be surfing and hiking posts from Hawaii! With all the rising interest in Twitter, it wasn’t a surprise that the KITV4 Morning Show was interested in doing a piece on it. Coincidentally, with our “State of the Web 2009″ panels of discussion coming up, it was a perfect time to discuss both.

The interview was held at 6am the day after St. Patrick’s Day, so with little sleep and some butterflies in my stomach, I headed out to the interview in the middle of the night. It was a little nerve wrecking to be on live television for the first time but the folks at McNeil Wilson Communications made it a super smooth process! The warm welcome from the entire KITV4 crew was much appreciated, and Mahealani Richardson made it feel like I was just talking shop with a friend. So here it is, why Twitter is a fantastic self branding and company marketing tool.

If you are interested in catching the “State of the Web 2009″ panel discussion, you can catch the live stream here, live on March 24th, 2009 at 9am Hawaii time.

My first attempt at a mini-surf video… After a stormy weekend in November the five of us decided to paddle out to a surf break in Hawaii Kai on the island of Oahu. Cheers to Jack for having an access key, we were able to take advantage of fun glassy waves and empty sets. Besides having the waves to ourselves, we also enjoyed dark and stormy conditions that gave us some amazing photos and video. Due to the grey and dark blues in the shots, I thought that U2′s “Electrical Storm” would be most fitting. This was the result.
